Visiting for your treatment

İzmir is the easiest Turkish city to recover in and the hardest to resist ruining your recovery in. It is flat, walkable, mild, and sits on a bay — which is exactly the problem, because the sea is off limits for a month and the sun here is stronger than the temperature suggests. Plan around that and it is a genuinely comfortable place to spend a week.

Arriving

Adnan Menderes Airport (ADB) is 18 km south of the centre and it is the easiest airport transfer of any Turkish city with clinics. The İZBAN suburban train runs from inside the terminal to Alsancak in about 35 minutes for the price of a coffee. On arrival that is fine. On the day after surgery take a taxi anyway — İZBAN gets busy and involves stairs and a walk at both ends.

Getting around

İzmir is flat, which matters more than it sounds when you are told not to bend over or exert yourself for a week. Kordon, the seafront promenade, runs for kilometres with no gradient at all. The metro is clean and rarely crowded outside peak. The ferries across the bay between Konak, Karşıyaka and Bostanlı are cheap, take fifteen minutes and you sit the whole way — the single best low-effort activity in the city during recovery.

Where to stay

Clinics cluster around Alsancak, Konak and Bayraklı. Alsancak is the obvious base: walkable, full of cafés and pharmacies, and close to both the seafront and most clinics. Ask for a room away from the Kıbrıs Şehitleri bar strip if you want to sleep — you will be sleeping semi-upright and lightly for several nights. A bath or handheld shower makes the daily scalp wash much easier.

The sun problem

İzmir has roughly 300 sunny days a year and the summer sun is severe. Your scalp cannot be covered with a hat for the first two weeks and cannot be exposed either, which in July and August means being outdoors is genuinely limited to early morning and evening. If you can choose your dates, April–May and late September–October are near-perfect: warm, bright, and mild enough to be outside all day in shade. Winter is mild and wet, which is unglamorous but harmless to a healing scalp.

Eating

İzmir food is the lightest in Turkey and that suits the first week well: grilled fish, olive-oil vegetable dishes, boyoz and gevrek for breakfast, and soups everywhere. Alsancak and Alsancak Pazarı have the range; Karşıyaka is cheaper. The thing to resist is the rakı-and-meze evening on the Kordon, which is the local ritual and involves the one drink you should not be having for a week.

What you can do, and when

Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.

  • day 2+
Bay ferry, Konak to Karşıyaka · Konak pier

Fifteen minutes, seated the whole way, covered deck, sea air and no crowds pressing at head height. The best thing you can do on day two or three when you can barely do anything.

  • day 3+
Kordon promenade, early morning · Alsancak

Completely flat, wide, and shaded by trees along most of its length. Gentle walking helps recovery from the start; do it before 10:00 or after 18:00 and the sun is not an issue.

  • day 2+
İzmir Museum of History and Art · Kültürpark

Indoors, quiet, and small enough not to tire you out. Kültürpark around it is flat and shaded if you want to sit afterwards.

  • day 6+
    Kemeraltı bazaar · Konak

Mostly covered, so the sun is not the issue — the crowding is. The lanes are narrow and people carry goods at shoulder and head height. Second half of the first week, on a weekday morning.

  • day 5+
Asansör and the Karataş streets · Karataş

The historic lift takes you up so you do not have to climb, and the view terrace is shaded in the afternoon. The surrounding streets are steep, so keep it to the top and the immediate area.

  • day 10+
Ephesus day trip · Selçuk, 80 km south

An hour each way, then two to three hours of walking on uneven marble in total, unbroken sun. There is essentially no shade on the site. This is the classic mistake people make in week one; leave it until day ten at the earliest and go at opening time.

  • day 30+
Alaçatı and Çeşme · Çeşme peninsula

The reason most people want to be near İzmir, and the one thing you genuinely cannot do — it is a beach town and swimming is off limits for a month. Worth a return trip rather than a compromised one.

What to avoid, and for how long

These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.

  • 30 days
Swimming in the sea, and Çeşme beaches generally

Sea water irritates healing skin and submersion softens scabs before they should come off. This is the hardest rule to keep in İzmir and the one people most often break.

  • 30 days
Turkish bath, sauna and steam room

Heat, steam and scrubbing all damage healing grafts; the scrub alone can pull transplanted follicles out.

  • 14 days
Midday sun, roughly 11:00 to 17:00

İzmir gets around 300 sunny days a year and the summer sun is severe. New grafts burn quickly, and you cannot solve it with a hat until your surgeon says which hat is acceptable.

  • 7 days
Alcohol, including the Kordon rakı evening

Thins the blood, worsens swelling and disrupts the sleep recovery depends on.

  • 10 days
Ephesus, Pergamon and other open archaeological sites

Hours of walking on uneven ground in unbroken sun with no shade — every constraint at once. They are not going anywhere.

  • 10 days
Crowded Kemeraltı lanes at peak hours

Narrow passages with goods carried at head height. A knock to the recipient area in the first ten days can cost grafts permanently.

  • 30 days
    Barbers and hairdressers

No razors, no clippers, no washing by someone who does not know what was done.

General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
