Visiting for your treatment

Bursa's single most famous attraction is the one thing you absolutely cannot do. The city is built on thermal springs and its bathhouses are the reason most visitors come — and hot water, steam and submersion are off limits for a month after a hair transplant. Everything else here suits recovery unusually well: it is green, cool in summer, and its great sights are quiet indoor spaces you walk through slowly.

Arriving

Most patients reach Bursa through İstanbul rather than its own airport. Yenişehir (YEI) has few flights and sits about 50 km east of the city. The alternative is the fast ferry from İstanbul's Yenikapı terminal to Mudanya, roughly two hours on the water followed by a 30-minute road transfer — comfortable, seated, and with no pressure on your head. If you are coming the day after surgery, the ferry is easier than the coach road around the bay.

Getting around

Bursa runs uphill. The city climbs the lower slopes of Uludağ, so the old centre, Çekirge and the mosque quarter sit at noticeably different heights and the streets between them are steep. In the first week, when you should not be straining or sweating, take the metro along the flat east–west line and taxis for anything that climbs. The distances look walkable on a map and are not.

Where to stay

The hotel districts split neatly: Çekirge is the thermal quarter, where nearly every hotel has its own mineral bath, and the city centre around Heykel is where the historic sights are. Book the centre. Staying in a spa hotel for a week during which you cannot use the spa is a specific kind of frustration, and the centre keeps you within a short flat walk of most of what you can do.

Eating

İskender kebab was invented here and the two long-established houses in the centre serve it as a plate rather than an event — thin döner over bread with tomato and melted butter, eaten at a table in twenty minutes. It is rich rather than spicy, which matters in the first week when heavy sweating is the thing to avoid. Bursa's other speciality is candied chestnut, kestane şekeri, sold everywhere and requiring nothing of you but a walk.

The weather

Bursa is cooler and greener than the coast, and in July and August that is a genuine advantage — you can be outside in the afternoon without the sun risk that makes Antalya or Adana difficult. Winter is wet and the upper city gets snow. Rain is not a problem for a healing scalp, but you cannot wear a hood or a cap for the first ten days, so pack an umbrella rather than a jacket with a hood.

What you can do, and when

Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.

  • day 2+
Koza Han silk courtyard · City centre, next to the Grand Mosque

A quiet 15th-century caravanserai courtyard with tea under the trees. Flat, shaded, seated, and about twenty minutes on your feet. This is the best thing to do on the day after surgery when you can barely do anything.

  • day 2+
Ulu Camii, the Grand Mosque · Atatürk Caddesi, city centre

Enormous, cool, dim and calm, with twenty domes and a fountain inside. Indoors, no sun, no crowd pressing at head height, and you walk slowly by design.

  • day 3+
Green Mosque and Green Tomb · Yeşil district, east of the centre

Two small, exceptional Ottoman buildings a few minutes apart. Short visit, mostly indoors, and a gentle enough walk between them once the first days of swelling have passed.

  • day 5+
Cumalıkızık village · 12 km east, taxi or bus

A preserved Ottoman village on the mountain's lower slope, cobbled and photogenic. The cobbles are uneven, so leave it until you are steady on your feet and not still dizzy from the first days.

  • day 7+
Uludağ cable car · Teferrüç station, city centre

One of the longest cable-car lines anywhere, and you are seated the entire way with the view doing the work. Wait a week: the top is around 1,800 m where the sun is stronger and the air colder, and you cannot cover your head yet.

  • day 4+
Tophane park and clock tower · Above the centre

A terrace looking out over the whole city and the plain, with the tombs of the first Ottoman sultans beside it. A short climb, so leave it a few days, then it is a bench and a view.

  • day 3+
Karagöz shadow-puppet museum · Çekirge Caddesi

Small, indoor, air-conditioned and genuinely odd — Turkish shadow theatre began in Bursa. Half an hour, no exertion, and a real thing to have seen rather than time filled.

What to avoid, and for how long

These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.

  • 30 days
Thermal baths and hammams — the reason most people visit Bursa

Heat, steam, sweat and shared water at once. Submersion softens the crusts protecting the grafts, heat raises blood flow to a healing scalp, and a communal pool is a bacterial exposure while the donor wounds are still closing. This is the rule people break in Bursa, and it is the one that matters most here.

  • 14 days
Steep walking between the centre, Çekirge and the mosque quarter

Sustained climbing raises blood pressure and makes you sweat, both of which work against early graft survival and can restart bleeding in the donor area. Take the taxi for two weeks; the hills are not going anywhere.

  • 30 days
Uludağ skiing and the snow at the summit

Impact, exertion, and a fall risk directly onto your head. Snow glare also puts more ultraviolet on an uncovered scalp than the same day at sea level.

  • 10 days
Wearing a hat, hood or cap

Anything resting on the recipient area can pull a graft out when it is removed. Bursa is cooler and wetter than most Turkish cities, so this rule is harder here — carry an umbrella instead.

  • 14 days
    Direct sun on the scalp

New skin burns easily and the area is numb, so you will not feel it happening. Bursa's summer is mild enough to be deceptive; the sun at midday is still strong.

  • 7 days
    Alcohol

It thins the blood and dehydrates, and both work against graft survival in the first week.

  • 10 days
Crowded bazaar aisles at busy hours

Not the walking but the contact. A shoulder or a bag at head height in a narrow aisle is exactly the accidental knock the first ten days are protecting against. Go early, when the passages are empty.

General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
