Adana has the shortest airport transfer of any Turkish city with hair transplant clinics — the airport is inside the city — and the hardest climate to recover in. From June to September the heat is severe and humid, and sweating is the one thing a fresh scalp cannot tolerate. If you come here in summer, plan the week around air conditioning and evenings rather than around sightseeing.
Şakirpaşa Airport sits a few kilometres from the centre, which makes the transfer after surgery about fifteen minutes rather than the hour İstanbul demands. This is a real advantage on the day you fly in and again on the day you leave, when your head is sore and traffic is the last thing you want. Adana is also the road and rail hub for the whole eastern Mediterranean, so a clinic here is easy to reach from Mersin, Hatay and Gaziantep.
The city is flat — genuinely flat, laid along the Seyhan river — so walking costs you nothing in exertion. The problem is not the terrain but the temperature. In summer, walking ten minutes at two in the afternoon will leave you sweating heavily, which softens the crusts protecting your grafts. Move around by taxi in daylight for the first fortnight and do your walking after sunset.
Stay in the centre near the river. The two things you will actually use are a room you can cool properly and a short flat walk to somewhere to eat, and the central hotels give you both. Confirm the air conditioning works before you accept the room; in an Adana summer this is not a comfort question but the difference between a manageable week and a sweaty one.
Adana kebab is a chilli-hot minced lamb kebab and it is what the city is known for, along with şalgam, a fermented turnip juice that comes mild or hot. Neither harms your grafts directly — but eating a spicy meal in a hot room makes you sweat heavily, and in the first ten days sweat is the thing you are managing. Ask for the mild version early on, eat in the evening, and save the proper hot one for the end of the trip.
Adana is one of the hottest cities in Turkey. July and August routinely run above 35 °C with high humidity from the coastal plain, and the sun is intense from mid-morning. Winter and the shoulder seasons are mild and genuinely pleasant. If you have a choice of dates, October to April makes this a much easier city to spend a recovery week in.
Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.
One of the largest mosques in Turkey, on the riverbank. Vast, cool inside, and a short flat walk from the central hotels. Twenty minutes indoors, out of the sun, on the day after surgery.
A working bridge that has carried traffic since the second century, next to the mosque. Best in the last hour of daylight, when the heat drops and the river reflects it. Flat, short, and you are only ever walking.
Adana lives outdoors after dark, and the riverside path is flat, shaded by then, and busy without being crowded. This is the way to be outside here in the first week without sweating.
Air-conditioned, quiet, and an hour at a slow pace. In an Adana summer the value of an indoor attraction is not only what is inside it.
A short drive north of the city, cooler than the centre, and mostly a matter of sitting and looking at water. Wait a few days — it is a taxi ride and there is no shade at the edge before evening.
A dramatic German-built railway viaduct in the mountains north of the city. It is a long day out with real sun exposure and uneven ground, so it belongs after the grafts are secure and you can wear a hat.
Covered, shaded and interesting, but narrow. Go in the morning before the aisles fill up — the risk here is a shoulder or a bag at head height rather than the walking.
These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.
Two problems at once. Heavy sweating softens the crusts protecting the grafts and raises infection risk, and direct sun burns new skin that is numb enough that you will not feel it happening. In an Adana July this rules out most of the middle of the day.
Sea water plus sun plus submersion. Salt irritates healing skin and going under softens the scabs before they should come away. The beaches are an hour away and worth waiting a month for.
Chilli does not touch your grafts, but a hot Adana kebab in a warm restaurant in August will make you sweat heavily, and sweat on a healing scalp is what you are managing in the first ten days. Ask for it mild until then.
The obvious solution to Adana's sun is exactly the thing you cannot do — anything resting on the recipient area can pull a graft out when removed. Use shade, an umbrella and timing instead.
It thins the blood and dehydrates, and in this heat dehydration arrives faster than you expect.
Heat, sweat, submersion and shared water. A hotel pool in an Adana summer is the most tempting rule to break here after the midday sun.
Both are open archaeological sites with no shade, uneven footing and a long drive each way. Excellent places, wrong fortnight.
General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
