Il suo soggiorno per il trattamento

Gaziantep is a food city, and a recovery week here is mostly a negotiation with that fact. The eating is world-class and almost all of it happens in hot, crowded rooms — which is the one environment a fresh scalp does not want. The compensation is the Zeugma mosaic museum: large, cool, indoor and genuinely extraordinary, and the single best thing to do anywhere in Turkey on your third day.

Arriving

Oğuzeli Airport is about 20 km south of the city and the transfer runs half an hour or so. Gaziantep is also the gateway for the whole southeast, so if your clinic is here you are within easy road distance of Şanlıurfa, Adıyaman and Kahramanmaraş. For the flight home, the airport is small enough that you are not walking long distances through terminals with a sore donor area.

Getting around

The modern centre is flat and easy. The old city and the castle are not — the bazaar quarter is a slope of cobbled lanes and stepped alleys, and the castle sits on a mound above it. In the first fortnight, when straining and sweating are the things to avoid, take a taxi to the top of the old city and walk down rather than up.

Where to stay

Staying near the museum and the modern centre gives you flat walking and air conditioning; staying in a restored stone house in the old city gives you atmosphere and a climb every time you leave. For a recovery week, take the flat option. The old city is a fifteen-minute taxi ride and you will enjoy it more as a destination than as a commute.

Eating

This is the reason people come. Baklava made with local pistachios, katmer for breakfast — a thin pastry with pistachio and clotted cream — lahmacun, and beyran, a fiercely spicy lamb soup traditionally eaten in the morning. The pastries are the ones to prioritise in the first week: they are sweet rather than hot, eaten quickly, and do not leave you sweating. Save beyran for the end of the trip.

The weather

Summers here are long, dry and severe — comparable to Adana without the humidity — and the sun is strong from mid-morning through late afternoon. Spring and autumn are excellent. Winter is cold enough to want a hat, which you cannot wear for the first ten days, so if you are coming in January plan your days around short distances between indoor places.

Cosa può fare e quando

Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.

  • dal giorno 2
Zeugma Mosaic Museum · Centre, near the modern quarter

One of the largest mosaic museums in the world, built around Roman floors rescued from a valley before it was flooded. Vast, cool, dim and walked slowly. Two hours indoors with no sun and no crowding — the best day-two activity in the country.

  • dal giorno 4
Bakırcılar Çarşısı, the coppersmiths' bazaar · Old city

Still a working bazaar where things are actually made rather than only sold. Covered and shaded, but narrow and noisy. Go in the morning before the aisles fill, and mind shoulders at head height rather than the walking.

  • dal giorno 3
Emine Göğüş Culinary Museum · Old city, near the castle

A small museum in an old stone house explaining why the food here is what it is. Half an hour, indoors, and it makes the eating you do afterwards better. Modest exertion once the first days of swelling have passed.

  • dal giorno 2
Katmer for breakfast · Old city breakfast houses

Pistachio and clotted cream in thin pastry, eaten in twenty minutes in the morning before the heat starts. Sweet rather than spicy, so it does not leave you sweating — which makes it the right first meal out.

  • dal giorno 7
Gaziantep Castle and the surrounding lanes · Old city

The castle sits on a mound above the old city and the lanes around it are stepped and cobbled. Wait a week: the climb is the kind of sustained effort that raises blood pressure, and the stones are uneven underfoot.

  • dal giorno 3
Pistachio and spice shops on Elmacı Pazarı · Old city market street

Flat, shaded, and mostly standing still while someone weighs things out. A genuinely good hour that costs you nothing physically, and the best place to buy what you take home.

  • dal giorno 12
Rumkale and the Euphrates at Halfeti · Halfeti, about 110 km east

A boat trip on the Euphrates to a ruined fortress, over the border in Şanlıurfa province. A long day, real sun on open water, and worth waiting for until the grafts are secure and you can cover your head.

Cosa evitare e per quanto tempo

These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.

  • 10 giorni
Hot, crowded restaurants in the first week

Not the food — the room. A busy Gaziantep kebab house in summer is hot enough to leave you sweating through a meal, and sweat softens the crusts protecting the grafts. Eat early or late, choose air-conditioned rooms, and prioritise pastry over soup.

  • 10 giorni
Beyran and other very spicy dishes in a warm room

Chilli does not touch your grafts, but a fiercely spicy soup in a hot room in August will make you sweat heavily, and heavy sweating on a healing scalp is the thing you are managing.

  • 14 giorni
Climbing to the castle and the stepped old-city lanes

Sustained climbing raises blood pressure and makes you sweat, both of which work against early graft survival and can restart donor-area bleeding. Uneven cobbles also add a fall risk you do not want in the first days.

  • 14 giorni
Direct sun between 11:00 and 17:00 in summer

New skin burns easily and the scalp is numb, so you get no warning. Gaziantep's dry heat is deceptive — it feels more bearable than Adana's while the ultraviolet load is just as high.

  • 10 giorni
    Wearing a cap

The obvious defence against this sun is exactly what you cannot do: anything resting on the recipient area can pull a graft out when removed. Use shade, timing and an umbrella instead.

  • 30 giorni
    Hammams

Heat, steam, sweat and shared water at once. Submersion softens the crusts before they should come away, and a communal pool exposes closing donor wounds to bacteria.

  • 7 giorni
    Alcohol

It thins the blood and dehydrates, and in this dry heat dehydration arrives faster than you notice.

General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
