Su viaje para el tratamiento

Most people who fly to İstanbul for a hair transplant stay three to seven nights, and spend almost all of that time waiting rather than being treated. The surgery takes one long day; the rest is recovery. This guide is written around what your scalp will and will not tolerate on each of those days — which rules out roughly half of what a normal İstanbul itinerary would tell you to do.

Arriving: which airport, and why it matters after surgery

İstanbul has two airports on opposite sides of the city. İstanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side and is the one most international flights use; Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side and is common for budget and connecting flights. The difference is not trivial for you: most hair transplant clinics cluster in Şişli, Nişantaşı, Levent and Ataşehir, and a transfer from SAW in traffic can take ninety minutes or more. On the day after surgery, ninety minutes in a car with a swollen forehead is genuinely unpleasant. If you can choose, fly into IST.

Getting around with a fresh transplant

Take taxis or your clinic's transfer, not the metro, for the first week. This is not about comfort. İstanbul's metro and tram are extremely crowded at peak hours, people carry bags at head height, and a knock to a grafted area in the first ten days can dislodge grafts permanently. The same goes for the Eminönü and Karaköy ferry piers at rush hour. Use the BiTaksi or Uber apps rather than hailing on the street — you will not be negotiating a fare in Turkish with a bandage on your head.

Where to stay

Stay walking distance from your clinic if you can. Şişli, Nişantaşı, Mecidiyeköy and Levent all have hotels within a short ride of the main clinic district, and being close means the day-three wash and any follow-up check cost you fifteen minutes instead of an hour each way. Ask for a room with a bathtub or a handheld shower head — you will be washing your scalp very gently, without pressure, and a fixed overhead shower makes that awkward. A room on a quiet side is worth paying for: you will be sleeping semi-upright on your back for several nights and light sleep is the norm.

What the first week actually looks like

Day 0 is the operation, usually eight to ten hours with breaks. Day 1 is the dressing check at the clinic and mostly rest. Day 2 to 3 brings swelling, often across the forehead and sometimes around the eyes — this is normal, peaks around day three, and passes. The first wash is usually done at the clinic on day three so you can watch the technique. Days four to ten you wash daily at the hotel and the scabs gradually loosen. By day ten to fourteen the crusts have gone and the transplanted hairs begin to shed, which alarms everyone and is entirely expected.

Eating well without hurting your recovery

Avoid alcohol for the first week — it thins the blood, worsens swelling and interferes with sleep you badly need. That rules out the rakı-and-meze evening that everyone recommends in İstanbul, at least until the end of your stay. Salt makes swelling worse in the first three days, which unfortunately covers a lot of Turkish street food. Good news: çorba (lentil or yayla soup), grilled fish, menemen, and yoghurt-based dishes are everywhere, gentle, and cheap. Turkish tea and ayran are fine throughout.

What it costs beyond the surgery

Budget separately for the things the clinic package usually excludes. A private airport transfer runs roughly 800–1,500 TL depending on airport and traffic. Hotels near the clinic district range from about 2,000 TL a night for a clean three-star to 6,000 TL and up for international chains. Meals are inexpensive: a good local lunch is 250–450 TL, a sit-down dinner 600–1,200 TL. Taxis within the central districts are usually 150–400 TL a trip. Prices move with the exchange rate, so treat these as an order of magnitude rather than a quote.

Qué puede hacer y cuándo

Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.

  • desde el día 3
Bosphorus ferry, Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı · Eminönü pier

You sit down the whole way, there is shade on the lower deck, and nobody comes near your head. Take the morning boat rather than the afternoon one — less sun, fewer people. Sit inside or under cover, not on the open top deck.

  • desde el día 2
    Basilica Cistern · Sultanahmet

Underground, cool, entirely out of the sun, and it takes about forty minutes. One of the few genuinely famous sights you can do in the first days without breaking any rule. The walkways are narrow, so go early to avoid crowds.

  • desde el día 2
    İstanbul Modern · Karaköy

Air conditioned, quiet, seated cafés, and you control how long you stay. Museums in general are the right answer for days two to four: indoors, no exertion, no sun, no crowds pressing against you.

  • desde el día 5
Kadıköy market and Moda waterfront · Kadıköy

A gentle, flat walk on the Asian side with excellent food. Leave it until day five or so: the market lanes get tight and shoulder-to-shoulder in the afternoon, which is exactly the head-knock risk you are avoiding early on. Go on a weekday morning.

  • desde el día 4
Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque · Sultanahmet

Both involve queuing outdoors in direct sun, which is the problem, not the buildings. From day four, go at opening time, carry an umbrella for shade rather than wearing a cap, and keep it short.

  • desde el día 4
Süleymaniye Mosque terrace at sunset · Fatih

The best free view in the city, and by late afternoon the sun is low enough not to be beating down on your scalp. Short walk from the tram, mostly flat once you are up there.

  • desde el día 7
    Grand Bazaar · Beyazıt

Covered, so no sun — but genuinely crowded, and shopkeepers gesture and lean in close. Wait until the second week when the grafts have secured, then it is fine.

  • desde el día 8
Princes' Islands day trip · ferry from Kabataş or Bostancı

Lovely, but it is a long ferry followed by hours of open sun with almost no shade, and the return boats are packed. This is a second-week activity, and even then take sunscreen-free shade: an umbrella, not a hat, until your surgeon clears headwear.

Qué evitar y durante cuánto tiempo

These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.

  • 30 días
Turkish bath (hamam), sauna and steam room

Heat, steam and the vigorous scrubbing a hamam involves are all bad for healing grafts. The scrub alone can pull out transplanted follicles. This is the single most common mistake visitors make, because a hamam is the thing everyone recommends in İstanbul.

  • 30 días
Swimming — sea, pool or hotel jacuzzi

Chlorine and sea water irritate healing skin, and submersion softens scabs before they are ready to come off. Most surgeons say four weeks; ask yours.

  • 14 días
    Direct sun on the scalp

New grafts burn easily and sunburn on a healing recipient area can affect how the hair takes. Use shade or an umbrella. Do not solve it with a hat unless your surgeon has said the specific hat is fine — pressure and friction are their own problem.

  • 7 días
    Alcohol

Thins the blood, increases swelling and bleeding risk in the first days, and disrupts the sleep your recovery depends on.

  • 10 días
Crowded metro, trams and packed markets at peak hours

Bags, elbows and doorways at head height. A single knock to the recipient area in the first ten days can cost you grafts that do not grow back.

  • 14 días
Gym, running and anything that makes you sweat heavily

Sweat irritates the healing area and raised blood pressure increases swelling. Light walking is encouraged from the start; effort is not.

  • 30 días
Barbers and any hairdresser near the recipient area

No razors, no clippers, no washing by someone who does not know what was done. The donor area can usually be trimmed earlier, but only your surgeon should say when.

General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
