Ankara is the quieter option. It has far fewer hair transplant clinics than İstanbul and almost none of the package-tour machinery, which cuts both ways: less choice, but also less of the high-volume, technician-led operation that gives Turkish hair transplants their mixed reputation. It is a working capital city rather than a tourist one, and for a recovery week that is mostly an advantage.
Esenboğa Airport (ESB) is about 28 km north of the centre and the drive is genuinely quick by Turkish standards — 40 to 50 minutes to Çankaya or Kızılay outside rush hour, which matters more than usual when you are travelling with a fresh transplant. The Belko Air shuttle runs to Kızılay and AŞTİ for a fraction of a taxi fare, but on the day after surgery pay for the taxi: the shuttle involves standing, luggage handling and a walk at the other end.
Ankara's metro is far less crowded than İstanbul's and the city is flatter and more spread out. Outside the 08:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:00 crush you can use it comfortably in the first week without the head-knock risk that rules out İstanbul's trams. Kızılay is the interchange for everything. Taxis are cheap and plentiful; use BiTaksi rather than flagging one down.
Most clinics are in Çankaya, Kavaklıdere and around Tunalı Hilmi. Staying in that triangle puts you within a short ride of the clinic and inside the city's best area for restaurants and pharmacies. Kızılay is cheaper and central but noisier. Ask for a room with a bath or handheld shower — you will be washing your scalp without pressure for a week and a fixed rain shower makes that awkward.
Ankara sits at about 900 metres and is dry. That is good and bad: the air is easier on a healing scalp than İstanbul's humidity, but you dehydrate faster and dehydration makes swelling worse. Drink more water than you think you need for the first three days. Summer sun at this altitude is harsh and winters are properly cold — a scalp you cannot cover with a hat is exposed to both, so plan the season if you have the choice. Spring and autumn are the comfortable windows.
Skip alcohol for the first week; it worsens swelling and wrecks the sleep you need. Ankara does soup better than almost anywhere — mercimek and işkembe places are open late and everywhere. Ulus and Kızılay have the cheap traditional food; Tunalı Hilmi and Bahçelievler have the sit-down restaurants. Keep salt down for the first three days, which unfortunately covers most of the pide and kebab menu.
Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.
The single thing to see in Ankara, and it is a long, exposed walk up a stone approach with almost no shade. Go at opening time or late afternoon from day four, and carry an umbrella rather than wearing a cap.
Indoors, cool, quiet, and genuinely world-class. About ninety minutes at a slow pace. This is the right answer for day two or three when you cannot be in the sun and should not be exerting yourself.
Converted railway workshop, now a contemporary art space with a good café. Air conditioned, seated, and you leave when you want. Low effort by design.
A flat, shaded walk with cafés the whole length. Gentle walking is good for you from the start; this is the easiest place in the city to do it without sun or crowds.
The climb is steep, the streets are cobbled and uneven, and the top is fully exposed. Worth it, but leave it until you are past the swelling and steady on your feet.
A flat lakeside loop about twenty minutes from the centre, and the closest thing to countryside. Second week: it is a long walk with no shade for most of it, and sun on a healing scalp is the constraint.
These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.
Heat, steam and scrubbing all damage healing grafts, and the scrub alone can pull transplanted follicles out.
Chlorine irritates healing skin and submersion softens scabs before they should come off.
Ankara is at 900 m and the summer sun is harsher than the temperature suggests. New grafts burn quickly and burning the recipient area can affect how the hair takes.
The air here is dry and at altitude you lose fluid faster than you notice. Dehydration makes the swelling of days two and three noticeably worse.
Thins the blood, increases swelling, and disrupts sleep during the days when recovery depends on it.
Ankara's metro is calm most of the day but genuinely packed at 08:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:00, and a knock to the recipient area in the first ten days can cost grafts permanently.
No razors, no clippers, no washing by someone who does not know what was done. Only your surgeon should say when this changes.
General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
