Antalya is where the conflict between the trip and the treatment is sharpest. It is a beach resort city with a strong sun and a hotel industry built around swimming pools — and for four weeks after a hair transplant you cannot swim, and for two you cannot put the sun on your scalp. Plenty of people book here anyway and it can work, but only if you plan the week as a recovery rather than a holiday.
Antalya Airport (AYT) is 13 km from the centre and transfers are short — twenty to thirty minutes to Lara, Konyaaltı or the old town outside the summer traffic. That is the shortest airport run of any Turkish clinic city, which genuinely helps on the day after surgery. In July and August the road to the western resorts backs up badly; ask the clinic to time your transfer outside the afternoon peak.
Most clinics are around Muratpaşa, Lara and the centre. The temptation is to book an all-inclusive resort, and that is the one thing to avoid: those hotels are organised entirely around the pool, the beach and the bar, and you can use none of the three. You will pay for a package whose whole value you cannot touch. A city hotel in Muratpaşa or near Kaleiçi puts you close to the clinic, close to pharmacies, and somewhere you can actually eat what you want.
The tram along the coast is rarely crowded outside commuter hours and the centre is walkable and mostly flat. Taxis are plentiful and short hops are cheap. The one thing to plan is shade: Antalya's streets are wide and open, and between roughly 11:00 and 17:00 in summer there is nowhere to hide. Carry an umbrella — genuinely, this is what locals do and nobody looks twice.
This matters more in Antalya than anywhere else in Turkey. From June to September the daytime heat is 32–40 °C with unbroken sun, which means your two-week no-sun window confines you indoors for most of the day. Sweating heavily is also off the table for a fortnight, and in an Antalya August you sweat walking to the corner. October to April is a different city: mild, bright, comfortable, and the sea is off limits anyway so you lose nothing by coming out of season. If you have any choice of dates, come between late October and April.
The old town and the Muratpaşa side have the real restaurants; the resort strips have buffets. Grilled fish, mezes and soups suit the first week well. Skip alcohol for seven days — worth saying plainly here, because in a resort town it is served constantly and half the point of an all-inclusive is that it is already paid for. Keep salt down for the first three days while swelling peaks.
Each entry says the earliest recovery day it is sensible from. Day 0 is your operation.
Air conditioned, excellent, and about ninety minutes. In summer this is not a nice-to-have but the practical answer to the middle of the day, when being outside is not an option for you.
Narrow lanes with real shade from the buildings, which is rare in this city. Go before 10:00 — by midday the open squares are unbearable and the crowds arrive with the tour groups.
Flat, tree-shaded, with sea views and benches every few metres. Gentle walking is good for recovery from the start and this is the easiest shaded walk in the city.
Shaded by trees, short walk, and cool near the water. Avoid the lower falls viewing platforms in the middle of the day — those are fully exposed.
Superb Roman sites and the same trap as Ephesus: hours on uneven stone with essentially no shade. Leave them to the second week and go at opening time, or in winter when it is genuinely pleasant.
The obvious Antalya activity and it fails on two counts early on: hours of direct sun on an open deck, and everybody swims. From two weeks the sun rule has lifted; swimming still has not, so plan to stay dry.
The reason most people pick Antalya, and the one thing the recovery timetable simply does not allow. Four weeks, then it is fine.
These are the constraints that rule out much of a normal itinerary. Your surgeon's instructions always come first.
Chlorine and sea water irritate healing skin, and submersion softens scabs before they should come off. In a resort city this is the rule people break, and it is the one that costs grafts.
Not medical, but practical: the pool, the beach and the bar are the entire product and you cannot use any of them for a month. You would be paying for a package you must ignore.
Antalya's summer sun is the strongest of any Turkish clinic city. New grafts burn fast, and sunburn on the recipient area can affect how the hair takes. An umbrella works; a hat is not allowed until your surgeon approves one.
Sweat irritates the healing area. In an Antalya July you sweat heavily just walking, which is why the season you choose changes what this rule costs you.
Heat, steam and scrubbing damage healing grafts; the scrub alone can pull transplanted follicles out.
Thins the blood, worsens swelling and disrupts sleep — and in an all-inclusive it is in front of you all day.
No razors, no clippers, no washing by someone who does not know what was done.
General guidance for planning, not medical advice. Recovery timelines differ between patients and techniques — follow the instructions your own surgeon gives you.
